Inclusive Special Education (Initial), M.S.

Priority Admissions Deadline: January 15 (summer semester start). Applications are considered on a rolling basis outside of this deadline.

Admissions Requirements

• Candidates typically hold a bachelor’s degree with 30 credits in liberal arts subjects—including six credits in each of four major content areas (Mathematics, Science, English, and History)—and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. Review our teacher education pre-requisites to see if you meet requirements.
• This program requires field experience to be coordinated by the participant in conjunction with the School of Education’s field education office.
• Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate study.
• A personal essay (500 words) describing your beliefs about student learning, commitment to educational access for all, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to foster collaboration, and ethics.
• 3 letters of recommendation, at least one from a faculty member.
• A résumé or CV.
• Prior experience working with children in formal or informal settings.
• GRE not required.

Note for international students: Because of New York State teacher certification requirements, students who are not from the United States and/or did not receive their undergraduate degree in the US are not eligible for this program.

Financial Support

• Baldanza Fellows Program: Full tuition scholarships plus living expense stipends for future teachers. Available for this and other select teaching master’s degree programs.
• Project IMPRESS aims to recruit, prepare, and retain future special educators to work in high-needs settings. The program provides up to 100% tuition scholarships in a supportive cohort experience. To be considered, address/talk about your interest in Project IMPRESS in your personal statement.
• Master’s and C.A.S. scholarships: All applicants are automatically considered for significant scholarships.
• TEACH Grant: Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education grants are available to students who intend to teach in an elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.
