The Department of Reading and Language Arts (RLA) has been at the forefront of literacy research and critically emerging issues for more than 70 years.
50% Master’s and CAS Scholarships available for students who begin their program by spring 2024
Our department is built upon strong lasting relationships between faculty and students. RLA welcomes new students into a community of scholars, including a strong network of loyal alumni. Students have the opportunity to work in school and community settings where ideas are put into action.
Faculty integrate current, cutting-edge research into their teaching, and use digital tools to prepare future educators for 21st century classrooms. Small class sizes create the intimate setting needed for engaging class discussion and critical thought. Students work with many faculty members who have received special recognition for teaching excellence, and are leaders in national and international professional organizations such as National Council of Teachers of English, International Literacy Association, and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
