The New York State Education Department has named Syracuse University School of Social Work—housed in the School of Education—an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) in the state. The approval is for a three-year term that runs through Oct. 31, 2029.
The School of Social Work is already an approved provider of continuing education credits for social work professionals. Emerging from a collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy Program and the Barnes Center at the Arch, this new approval expands the School’s professional development offerings to LMHCs associated with these programs and beyond.
Under New York State law, LMHCs are required to complete a minimum of 36 hours of formal, graduate-level continuing education. Courses typically cover topics such as clinical interventions and evidence-based practice and cross-disciplinary subjects related to mental health practice, such as medicine, law, ethics, education, and behavioral and social sciences.
“This new authorization builds upon our commitment to delivering high-quality continuing education across the mental health field, further expanding our collaborative programming for marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and counseling professionals,” says Joseph L. Smith, Associate Teaching Professor and Director of Continuing Education and Professional Development in the School of Social Work.
