How do I apply for a graduate program in the School of Education

What is the application deadline? Deadlines vary by program and semester start. Some programs have priority deadlines; applications may be considered after the deadline on a rolling basis. You can find deadlines for each program on our website.
Is there a fee to apply to the School of Education?
Yes, the application fee is $75. Fee waivers may be available for eligible applicants, such as veterans or participants in student development programs such as McNair Scholars. Contact us at soeadmissions@syr.edu for more information.
What are the minimum admission requirements?
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and meet the minimum GPA requirement (typically a 3.0). Specific programs may have additional requirements, such as teaching certification or work experience. Visit each program’s Admissions and Financial Aid page for additional information.
Are Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores required?
None of our graduate programs require the GRE to apply.
What materials are required for the graduate application?
Most programs require the following materials, but specific requirements are listed on each program’s Admissions and Financial Aid page:
Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
Personal statement or statement of purpose
Resume or CV
Letters of recommendation (usually 2-3), with at least two from former faculty/instructors
Proof of English proficiency (for international students)
Whom should I ask for letters of recommendation? Choose recommenders who know you academically, professionally, or personally in a capacity relevant to your intended program. Professors, supervisors, or mentors are ideal.
Can I visit campus or speak with a faculty member before applying?
Yes, campus visits and virtual meetings with faculty or admissions staff are welcome and can be arranged. Contact soeadmissions@syr.edu for arrangements.
International Applicants
Can international students apply to the School of Education?

Are there specific admission requirements for international students? International students follow the same application process as domestic applicants. In addition to the general admission requirements, international students must provide:

Official copies of transcripts with English translations (if not issued in English).
Financial documentation (after admission, for visa processing).
Do I need to have my transcripts evaluated by WES or ECE?
No, third-party evaluations are not required.
What is the required English Proficiency score?
Proof of English proficiency is required unless the applicant has a degree from an English-speaking institution or is from a country where English is the spoken language. The School of Education has preferred scores for TOEFL (80+), IELTS (6.5+), Duolingo (120+), Cambridge (176+), SAT-EBRW (600), and ACT-English (27).
Can I apply if my English proficiency score is below the minimum? If your score is slightly below the minimum, you may be considered for conditional admission and required to complete an English language program through Syracuse University’s English Language Institute (ELI).
How can I submit my proof of English proficiency?
You can self-report your scores on the application, then submit your test scores directly from the testing agency to Syracuse University via email at grad@syr.edu or by mail to: Enrollment Processing, Graduate Admissions, Syracuse University, 804 University Ave, Syracuse NY 13244, USA
Is there an application fee waiver for international students? No, the School of Education is not able to grant fee waivers at this time.
Is funding available for graduate students? Yes, SOE offers various forms of funding, including scholarships, graduate assistantships, and fellowships. Indicate your interest in funding when you apply. Check the Scholarships and Financial Aid page for more information.
Do I have to complete a separate application for SOE scholarships?
No, SOE general scholarships do not require a separate application. Some special funding programs, like the Baldanza Fellowship, do require a supplemental application. What types of funding or scholarships are available for international students?
International students are eligible for fellowships and scholarships offered through the School of Education, as well as graduate assistantships (which may include tuition waivers and stipends).
Notification and Acceptance
How will I know if my application is complete?
You can track your application through the graduate application system. You will be notified via email if any materials are missing.
When will I hear back about my admissions decision?
Decisions typically take 4-6 weeks after the admissions deadline, but they may vary by program.
Can I defer my admisisons if I am accepted?
You can defer your admissions to another semester for up to a year. However, there is not guarantee that if you defer your admission that your scholarship/financial aid will also transfer to a future semester.
Can I do a graduate program part-time or online?
Many programs offer part-time and online options. Check each program details for the most accurate information.
