Mathematics Education, Ph.D.

Suggested Application Deadline: January 15 (summer or fall semester start) or October 1 (spring semester start). Applicants should ensure that all of the required materials are submitted by that date.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or equivalent (at least 30 credits of undergraduate mathematics from the calculus level up)
  • Master’s degree required in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field
  • The equivalent of two years of teaching experience at the K-16 level
  • Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate study
  • Personal statement, including a discussion of your research
  • Professional/academic writing sample
  • Resume or CV
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • GRE is optional (not required)
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (international students)

We expect students to have earned a master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field prior to being admitted to the doctoral program. Syracuse University offers these degree programs. We generally do not admit students who do not have teaching experience.
