Mathematics Education, Ph.D.

Admission for fall, spring, and summer semester starts are considered on a rolling basis. However, the suggested deadline for the fall semester is January 15 of the same year. Applicants should ensure that all of the required materials are submitted by that date.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or equivalent (at least 30 credits of undergraduate mathematics from the calculus level up)
  • Master’s degree required in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field
  • The equivalent of two years of teaching experience at the K-16 level
  • Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate study
  • Personal statement, including a discussion of your research
  • Professional/academic writing sample
  • Resume or CV
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • GRE is optional (not required)
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores (international students)

We expect students to have earned a master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field prior to being admitted to the doctoral program. Syracuse University offers these degree programs. We generally do not admit students who do not have teaching experience.
