The master’s degree in Mathematics Education (Grades 7-12, Preparation) prepares graduates to foster a love of mathematics in their students, through an engaging curriculum and instruction that adapts to the needs of all learners. This program provides deep exploration into mathematics education theory and practice, content instruction, culturally relevant pedagogy, integration of media and technology in the classroom, and standards-based assessments. This program aligns with the professional standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and meets the academic requirements for initial and professional New York State teacher certification in Mathematics (grades 7-12).
Graduates of this program have a strong foundation of mathematical knowledge, cutting-edge mathematics practices, and instructional best practices. Our graduates are in K-12 school, community, and other settings including mathematics teachers; teacher leaders, department chairs, or school administrators; mathematicians, statisticians, or actuaries; or further studies in Mathematics Education, Educational Leadership, Public Administration, or another area of interest.
The Mathematics Education master’s program requires 38 graduate credits and can be completed full time in one calendar year, including summer. All students will take courses in the mathematics content and education, adaptive instruction, and education methods. Coursework areas may include:
This includes two full-time student teaching placements in local urban and suburban schools, including one at the middle grades level (7-8) and one at the high school level (9-12). One of these placements will be in a high needs setting. You’ll cap off your degree program with a master’s exam, thesis, or special project.
