Emeritus Professor Honored at InterFaith Works Leadership Award Dinner

Alan and Dottie Goldberg at the Holocaust Museum HoustonAlan Goldberg, professor emeritus of counseling, will be recognized at the 2019 InterFaith Works Leadership Award Dinner. Goldberg is being honored as a community visionary for his work in Holocaust and genocide education. The dinner will take place Tuesday, April 30 at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College.

InterFaith Works aims to create dialogue and build bridges of understanding among people of different religions and across racial divides. This year’s Leadership Award Dinner, Celebrating Visionaries, will recognize individuals from the greater Syracuse community who have served the underserved, advocated for equity, educated youth, broken barriers, crossed divides and advanced the community through innovative programs and projects.

Goldberg’s 50 years of service to Syracuse University included many years as a dedicated professor of counseling and counselor education and service as department chair. He is a former president of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Following his retirement from University teaching, he helped spearhead the creation of the Holocaust and Genocide Education Initiative at Syracuse University, which includes the Spector/Warren Fellowship for Future Educators. Goldberg’s decade-long leadership of the program allowed hundreds of pre-service and in-service teachers and thousands of community members to learn from and share the lessons of the Holocaust and other atrocities through survivor testimonies and other primary sources, art, music, film, and recovered works.  Goldberg has written over a dozen blog posts about the Holocaust and the importance of remembrance for The Post-Standard/Syracuse.com and InterFaith Works CNY Inspirations column. He also serves as the Chair of Communications for the Jewish Federation of CNY.
