School Counseling, CAS

The residential Certificate of Advanced Study in School Counseling prepares graduates to be thoughtful, effective, responsive, empathetic counselors in educational settings who advocate for their students and provide support in line with contemporary expectations and cutting-edge best practices.

This program follows the national model and standards of the American School Counselor Association in preparing students for permanent or provisional/permanent New York State Certification as a School Counselor. Students learn in person through the School of Education on the Syracuse University campus.

Our faculty are actively engaged in research, practice, and leadership in the field of school counseling, both locally and on the national level. Small class sizes translate into meaningful relationships with faculty and fellow students that support you through the program and into a career as a school counselor.

Application Deadline: January 15 | More admissions information

As a student, you’ll develop knowledge in:

  • Cultural and social diversity theories, and multicultural competencies in research and practice.
Characteristics, risk factors, warning signs, and action needed for students at risk for learning, mental health, or behavioral disorders.
  • The contemporary roles and responsibilities of school counselor.
  • Systemic approaches to more effectively serve underrepresented students.
  • Data-driven program development and implementation.
  • Individual counseling, group counseling, consultation, and collaboration with other professionals.

Students will also have opportunities to participate in ongoing research projects with our faculty, and attend, present at, and become involved with professional organizations and conferences. You will engage in immersive internships in area schools, as well as network, interview, and observe current school counseling professionals and stakeholders with whom they work. This can include developing and facilitating small group work in P-12 schools, and providing college access services to students, families, and communities.

This program has a 100% placement rate for practicums and internships, and a 90+% rate of employment at graduation. Our students often have a master’s degree in School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling and enter the CAS program in order to be certified to work directly in P-12 school settings as school, guidance, career, ADAPEP, family support, student assistance, or student support counselors.
