In the third edition of Leadership for Increasingly Diverse Schools (Routledge, 2025), editors George Theoharis, Professor of Educational Leadership and Inclusive Elementary/Early Childhood Education at Syracuse University School of Education, and Martin Scanlan, Professor of Educational Leadership at Boston College, provide both practicing and aspiring school leaders the theory, research, and practical guidance to foster learning environments that promote educational equity and excellence for all students.
The new edition will be launched at a Zoom event on Sept. 29, 2025, at 7 p.m., featuring the editors and many of the chapter authors.
“This is a very difficult time for K-12 schools. Even in this moment, we know that there are so many school leaders who are committed to meeting the needs of each and every child in their care,” says Theoharis. “This book provides a wealth of knowledge leaders need and a ton of leadership practices to support their work to make our schools better places for our increasingly diverse students.”
Theoharis adds, “Regardless of the politicization of diversity, equity, and inclusion and backlash against schools trying to teach all kids accurate content, we know school leaders want support meeting the needs of their increasingly diverse students and families.”
Leadership for Increasingly Diverse Schools helps readers sharpen their awareness of how students’ multiple dimensions of diversity intersect, as well as develop strategies for leading schools where students of all socioeconomic statuses, races, religions, gender and sexual identities, languages, and disabilities flourish.
“We know school leaders want support meeting the needs of their increasingly diverse students and families.”
“Theoharis and Scanlan have assembled an impressive assemblage of experts in educational leadership and policy to offer conceptually rich, practically sound, research-based guidance for educational leaders,” write the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Professor Kevin Lawrence Henry Jr. and Professor Colleen Capper.
They continue, “Regardless of where one is on their equity journey, this book offers the insights necessary to take your practice to the next level. The authors invite us to be a part of a community of educators who endeavor to truly make a difference in the lives of our students.”
The third edition includes the following:
- Each chapter focuses on a specific dimension of diversity and discusses intersectionality across other areas of difference, including disability, language, race, socioeconomic status, sexual and gender identity, religion, and social ecosystems.
- Chapters synthesize literature, share practical strategies and tools, include school-level and district-level cases illustrating inclusive leadership, and provide extended learning opportunities.
- A greater focus on strategies for readers’ professional development, expanded coverage of educational infrastructure, and discussion of current political context and discourse including anti-DEI movements.
- The Online Support Material offers additional resources, documents, and links to videos and podcasts.
