Professor Melissa Luke, Doctoral Student Kahyen Shin Receive ACA Awards

A faculty member and a doctoral student in Syracuse University School of Education’s Counseling and Human Services program have received prestigious national awards from the American Counseling Association. Both awards will be presented during the 2025 ACA Conference and Expo in Orlando, FL.

Professor Melissa Luke will be recognized with the Thomas Hohenshil National Publication Award, a career award that honors a scholar in counseling or counselor education who has demonstrated leadership in publishing and editorship and who has made outstanding contributions to the publication of counseling-related literature.

The award is named for Thomas Hohenshil, who served the Journal of Counseling and Development in several capacities for more than 20 years. Its honorarium is made possible by anonymous donors through The American Counseling Association Foundation.

Additionally, Kahyen Shin, a second-year Counseling and Counselor Education doctoral student, will receive the ACA Best Practices in Research, Student Award.

Shin is recognized for “A Qualitative Investigation on Career Barriers and Career Preparation Behaviors of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) in South Korean Colleges,” published in the October 2024 issue of Frontiers in Psychology. 

“In this Consensual Qualitative Research study, Kahyen investigated the career experiences of South Korean TCKs and identified aspects of both career preparation and barrier behaviors that impact the participants and their career experiences,” explains Professor Luke. “This work was described as ‘innovative’ and ‘well-prepared methodologically,’ and further her ‘commitment to community-based, participatory research’ was lauded.”
