School of Education Renews Partnership with City Year AmeriCorps

Syracuse University and City Year, an education organization affiliated with AmeriCorps, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to renew their multi-year partnership.

A public-private partnership with 40,000 alumni, City Year operates in 29 US cities with international affiliates in the UK and South Africa. Through the program, teams of 17- to 25-year-olds serve in schools as student success coaches, providing student, classroom, and whole school support intended to boost student engagement and high school graduation rates.

“Research shows the more time a student spends with a City Year AmeriCorps member serving as a student success coach, the better the student outcomes—academically, interpersonally, and in terms of attendance,” says City Year Director of Alumni Career Partnerships Alison Thurner. “This partnership will help bring talented and committed young leaders with a high level of maturity, insight, and experience to the Syracuse campus.”

The agreement allows members of the City Year AmeriCorps community who meet eligibility requirements to enroll at SOE as full-time graduate students. Those eligible for this benefit include currently serving AmeriCorps members, alumni who completed a term of AmeriCorps service, and staff members employed for at least two years.

For successful applicants, SOE will waive the graduate application fee and provide a scholarship equal to 33% of tuition, renewable for the duration of the program. Additionally, admitted students can defer their enrollment by one year if they decide to stay with City Year for a prolonged commitment before starting their studies. Benefit recipients are recognized as City Year National Service Scholars.
