The SOE Office of Career Services works with students on New York State teacher certification, credential files, job search workshops and resources, resume and cover letter review, interview preparation and practice, employer information and recruiting sessions, and help with the graduate school search and application process.

Teacher/School Certification

Career Services helps students in preparation programs apply for New York State certification for teachers, school leaders, and school counselors. While our preparation programs meet the academic requirements, additional paperwork and testing is required to receive certification. Contact Career Services or your advisor with any questions about the process.

Social Work and Mental Health Counseling Licensure

Students in applicable master’s degree programs are eligible to apply for New York State licensure upon completion of their degree:

• M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling: NYS Licensed Mental Health Counselors; Nationally Certified Counselor through the National Counselor Examination (NCE).
• M.S.W. in Social Work: NYS Licensed Clincal Social Worker or Licensed Master Social Worker; students interested in getting licensed in another state should look for information from the Association of Social Work Boards (A.S.W.B.).

Career Services can assist our graduates with these application and testing processes. Students who received their degree from another university, but are interested in licensure, must apply to the state independently and have their transcript and internship records reviewed. Once you are clear on exactly what they require from you, you can contact us about taking any classes still required as a non-matriculated student.

Mentor Connect

Mentor Connect is a student-alumni mentoring program that bridges students with School of Education graduates who have experience in the field of education and beyond. The program is designed to foster professional growth, enhance career readiness, and provide students with insight into their future professions. By pairing current students with alumni mentors, participants gain personalized guidance, networking opportunities, and real-world advice tailored to their career goals. Get connected!

Be sure to join and populate Handshake—Syracuse University’s career management platform—to search for jobs and internships, learn about career events and information sessions, connect with employers, and schedule career counseling appointments.

Handshake is also where SOE graduates will complete their First Destination Survey (FDS) during their final semester.
