The minor in Coaching prepare allows all undergraduate students to coach sports in schools, organized sports, and community organizations.
As more youth participate in recreational and secondary school (grades 7-12) sports programs, the need for coaches and officials is growing rapidly. This minor meets and exceeds the academic requirements for a New York State temporary Coaching License, and prepares students for a range of roles such as:
The Coaching minor requires 18 credits, including 3 required courses and another 4-5 electives. Classes include coaching techniques, health sciences, athletics in education, nutrition, motor behavior, condition, and injury prevention. Additional trainings including Safe & Healthy Learning Environments and CPR are not required for the coaching minor, but are required for the New York State temporary Coaching License. More information on academic requirements available in the Syracuse University Course Catalog.
If you are interesting in declaring a minor, talk to your advisor in your home school or college to see if you have enough room for the courses, a minimum of a 2.5 GPA, and complete the Minor Declaration Form. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Academic and Student Services or the Coaching minor program coordinator. The Coaching minor content and requirements for the Coaching License are already a part of requirements for the Health & Physical Education and Physical Education majors, so those students cannot add a Coaching minor.
If you are interested in completing the requirements for the New York State temporary Coaching License without completing the full coaching minor, please contact the program coordinator for more information.
