Music Education (All Grades), M.S./M.Mus.

Admission for are considered for fall semester starts on a rolling basis, with a suggested deadline of January 15. Applicants should ensure that all of the required materials are submitted by that date.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate study
  • Competitive scores on one of the following admissions entrance exams: Graduate Record Examination (GRE); Miller Analogy Test (MAT); or other acceptable, nationally normed admissions examination; or a passing score on the Praxis: Core Academic Skills for EducatorsedTPA, or ATS-W exam.
  • A personal essay describing the candidate’s beliefs about music teaching, student learning, commitment to diversity, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to foster collaboration, and ethics.
  • Letters of recommendation from professors and/or employers.
  • Interview recommended (telephone interviews accepted).
  • Resume or CV.
  • No audition is required.

Additional requirements for the Preparation M.S. program

  • Bachelor’s degree in music from an institution accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
  • No existing teacher certification in music.

Additional requirements for the Professional M.S. or M.Mus. programs

  • New York State initial certification in Music (all grades).
