Higher Education, Ph.D.

The Higher Education doctoral program requires a minimum of 90 graduate credits beyond the undergraduate degree, and 9-24 credits of dissertation work. Students can study full time or part time—most of our Ph.D. students are working full time while they complete the program in its entirety. Coursework areas made include:

  • Public Policy in Higher Education
  • Race, Power, & Politics
  • Laboratory in Learning Communities
  • Research on the College Student
  • Organization and Administration in Higher Education
  • American Colleges and Universities

Additional Requirements

  • Foundations of Higher Education: minimum of 15 credits.
  • Teaching and Learning: minimum of 15 credits, plus University Teaching Experience as determined with advisor.
  • Organization and Governance: minimum of 9 credits.
  • Assessment, Research, and Evaluation: 6 introductory credits in research methodology, and 6 credits in advanced research methodology (either qualitative or quantitative focus).
  • Research apprenticeship, typically in the context of a required or elective course or as an independent study with the student’s advisor.
  • Doctoral Qualifying Exam.
  • Dissertation proposal, writing, submission, and defense (within 5 years of exam).
