School Counseling, CAS

Program Requirements

The School Counseling certificate program requires 30 graduate credits. It can be completed full-time in two semesters, or taken part-time for students who are also working full time. This program is fully customized for each student in collaboration with their advisor.

A total of 60 credits is required to receive New York Certification as a School Counselor. This program typically includes 12-30 credits towards that requirements, depending on previous counseling experience and graduate coursework. For graduates of a counseling and human services master’s program, only 12 credits beyond the master’s degree are required.

Coursework areas may include:

  • The Counselor in the Schools
  • College Access and Retention
  • Counseling Children and Adolescents
  • Crisis Counseling
  • Leadership and Implementation
  • Substance Abuse Counseling
  • Play Therapy

Students must also complete a special project, typical as part of one of their courses. More information on academic requirements available in the Syracuse University Course Catalog.
