David DeAngelis

David DeAngelis (he/him/his) joins the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Setnor School of Music and the School of Education in Fall 2024 as a tenure-track assistant professor of music education.

Prior to joining Syracuse University, DeAngelis served as an instructor and teaching assistant at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and as founding music teacher of KIPP SF College Prep High School in San Francisco, where he was also baseball coach and athletic director.

DeAngelis served as an advisor for Arts and Music Programs for Education in Detention Centers (AMPED), a music mentorship program offered by the Northwestern Center for Civic Engagement that connects undergraduates with incarcerated youth. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Society for Research in Music Education, the Society for Music Teacher Education, the American Educational Research Association and the Illinois Music Educators Association.

Research & Scholarship

DeAngelis’s research interests include beginning instrumental instruction and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in music education, specifically focusing on music teacher preparation. He recently published articles in the Journal of Music Teacher Education and Update: Applications for Research in Music Education and presented at the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium, the National Association for Music Education Conference and Desert Skies Symposium on Research in Music Learning and Teaching.
