USASMA Fellowship Program at Fort Bliss

Created in 2019, the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy Fellowship Program is a partnership between USASMA in Fort Bliss, TX, and Syracuse University, allowing fellows to complete a master’s degree in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation fully online through the School of Education.

Fellows are assigned to Fort Bliss for three years and typically finish their degrees within a year. Many fellows go on to design and instruct the academy’s Sergeants Major Course, which educates the military’s enlisted personnel to operate on all levels of leadership.

Syracuse was selected as an educational partner for the Fellowship Program not only because of the high quality of the IDDE master’s program but also because of support from University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families, Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, and Center for Online and Digital Learning at the College of Professional Studies.

Program Strengths

  • Learn principles of instruction, techniques in educational evaluation, technologies for instructional settings, and strategies in educational project management.
  • Design, develop, implement, and analyze curriculums and instructional solutions.
  • Analyze the concepts and required results of instruction and other projects.
  • Understand learners’ motivations: What they need to know, what they are able to learn, and how they feel about that knowledge.
  • Equip military teams with the tools to apply critical and creative thinking, sound judgment, and reasoned decision-making skills while operating in complex environments.
  • Augment your military experience with project management and evaluation skills marketable in business and elsewhere.

SGM Craig Collins headshot“IDDE taught me flexibility and a flexible attitude. The principles I learned can easily be adapted to the current environment. The IDDE program could be adapted to almost any field. What IDDE does and what the Army does are very complimentary.”
