Admission for summer semester starts only are considered on a rolling basis, with a suggested deadline of January 15. Applicants should ensure that all of the required materials are submitted by that date.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
  • An English major, or a 30-credit major equivalent (including 9 credits of writing instruction or writing intensive courses) determined via transcript review.
  • Official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate study
  • Competitive scores on one of the following admissions entrance exams: Graduate Record Examination (GRE); Miller Analogy Test (MAT); or other acceptable, nationally normed admissions examination; or a passing score on the Praxis: Core Academic Skills for EducatorsedTPA, or ATS-W exam.
  • A personal essay describing the candidate’s beliefs about student learning, commitment to diversity, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to foster collaboration, and ethics.
  • 3 Letters of recommendation, at least one from a faculty member
  • Experience working with young people in formal or informal capacities.
  • Interview encouraged.
  • TOEFL is required for applicants whose native language is other than English
  • Applicants with or without existing New York State teacher certification may apply; however, students Must have NO existing English Language Arts certification.
