The Zell Lecture sponsored by the Minor in Atrocity Studies and the Practices of Social Justice

Magda MatacheThe call for reparations as a critical element in healing and accountability for state wrongs has mobilized many constituencies across the globe in the past decades. Drawing from the enslavement of Roma on the territory of Romania and anti-Roma collective injustice, Dr. Matache will examine the concept of reparations and focus on translating theory into possible strategies to heal and repair past and present harm and to prevent future wrongdoing.

Margareta (Magda) Matache is a justice activist and scholar from Romania, director of the Roma Program at the Harvard FXB Center, and also a Harvard instructor. Previously, Matache was the Executive Director of Romani CRISS, a leading Roma rights organization that defends the rights of Roma. In 2012 she was awarded a Hauser postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard FXB Center where she founded the Roma Program. She co-edited Realizing Roma Rights, an investigation of anti-Roma racism, with the goal to set the foundations for a more inclusive Europe. Her work has ranged from the rights and agency of Romani children and adolescents to early childhood development, anti-Roma racism, reparations, segregation in education, and participatory action research.
