Arts Education (PreK-Grade 12), M.S.

Program Requirements

The Arts Education master’s program requires 39 credits. This includes two full-time student teaching placements in local urban and suburban schools, including one at the elementary level and one at the secondary level.

In addition, preparation students may be required to take studio art/design, art history, and liberal arts distribution courses to fulfill prerequisite requirements for certification. Many of these are usually fulfilled by previous undergraduate and graduate study, or can be completed after you start your master’s program (but before graduation). These requirements are determined by reviewing your transcripts during the admissions process; contact the department for more information.

Coursework areas may include:

  • Narrative Inquiry in Research and Creative Practice
  • Philosophy & Foundation of Art Education Practice
  • Making Methodology: Exploring Arts-based Research
  • Methods and Practice in Teaching Art
  • Adapting Instruction for Diverse Student Needs
  • Understanding Learning and Teaching

All students will also participate in the Professional Development School with students from across the School of Education, and will complete their degree program with a master’s exam, thesis, or special project. More information on academic requirements available in the Syracuse University Course Catalog.
