Art Education (PreK-Grade 12), M.S.

The M.S. programs in Art Education prepare graduates to be innovative artists, effective and engaging educators, and advocates of the arts in the schools and communities they serve.

These dual programs from both the School of Education’s Department of Teaching and Leadership and The College of Visual and Performing Arts provide professional skills and curriculum strategies that are both arts-based and principle-centered, promoting community engaged scholarship and problem solving across disciplines. There are two Art Education master’s degrees at Syracuse, depending on your existing New York State teacher certification:

• The Art Education: Preparation program is for candidates with a major or background in art, but no existing art certification. This program meets the academic requirements for both initial and professional New York State teacher certification in Visual Arts (all grades).
• The Art Education: Professional program is for candidates with existing New York State initial teacher certification in Visual Arts (all grades). This program meets the academic requirements for professional New York State teacher certification in Visual Arts.

• Complete your degree in one calendar year, or study part time while working with flexible course options.
• Prepares students for teaching diverse students in 21st century classrooms. From experiences in university classrooms, online, and in schools and communities, you will learn to design inclusive, culturally relevant pedagogy for all students.
• Work closely with nationally recognized faculty and artists in a program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
• Opportunities for community involvement and youth mentorship, including the Saturday Art Workshops for Young People.
• Participate in EDU Sims, which are standardized simulations of common interactions in classroom and school environments to help you identify your strengths and develop your professional skills.
• Take part in School of Education short-term study abroad programs around the world. Through the Himan Brown Fellowship, School of Education students are also eligible for exclusive funding to support study abroad experiences.
• Small student cohorts and a highly engaged alumni network mean you get to know your teachers and peers who will become your lifelong colleagues.
• Because you will be a student in two different schools within Syracuse University, you will receive advising support and faculty expertise from both the School of Education and the School of Art, including academic advising support, teacher certification, and job search support.
• The local chapter of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) provides opportunities for professional development, hosting guest speakers and promoting and practicing outreach and community service through the arts.

The program’s legacy is the work of a long list of innovative artists and educators. Our graduates are in K-12 schools, preschool, and community settings including:

• Art and Enrichment teachers
• Teacher leaders, department chairs, or school administrators
• Professional artists, illustrators, and designers
• Further studies in Teaching and Curriculum, Educational Leadership, Public Administration, Business, or another area of interest
