Ashby appointed co-director of Schools of Promise

Dr. Christine Ashby, Assistant Professor of Inclusive Education, appointed as co-director of Schools of Promise. Professor Ashby joins current co-directors, Dr. Julie Causton-Theoharis and Dr. George Theoharis. Schools of Promise (SOP) is a partnership between Syracuse University School of Education and local school districts. The goal is to improve elementary schools through inclusion for all students, especially those who have traditionally been marginalized, including students with disabilities, students learning English, students from low-income families. SOP centers on issues of belonging and creating daily instruction designed to be inclusive of all students regardless of abilities in the general education setting.

Christy teaches in the Inclusive Elementary and Special Education Program and the graduate programs of the School of Education. Her teaching and research focuses on inclusive education broadly, with specific emphasis on students with labels of autism and other developmental disabilities. Her work also includes differentiated instruction, collaborative teaching, and inclusive school reform. Additionally, Christy is the Research Director for the Facilitated Communication Institute. Christy's addition to the leadership team of Schools of Promise will expand this work to new schools and further develop existing partnerships.
