New Faculty Positions

Professor, Art Education

The School of Art & Design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in art education, beginning Fall 2009. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience and current professional status.

Students in Art Education at Syracuse University are dually enrolled in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education. Syracuse University Art Education degree programs are in the midst of a transformation aimed at rapidly increasing the national status and international reputation of our department. Art Education degree programs provide students with an expertise in the development of arts-based and design-oriented curricula linked to national and New York State learning standards for the visual arts, while promoting multiliteracies, inclusivity, critical inquiry and social responsibility.

Given the emerging importance of the arts in University K-12 urban education and community initiatives in the Syracuse and Central New York region, we seek a new faculty member with expertise in arts education pedagogical strategies and a dynamic and innovative research profile that augments and enhances the current strengths of our faculty. This new faculty member is expected to play a central role in the School of Education's engagements with the Syracuse City School District within the Partnership for Better Education.

Job Specific Qualifications

Knowledge of current pedagogical practices, issues, and theories in art education is required, along with teaching experience at the post-secondary level, or equivalent. Promotion of the core values, mission and vision of the SU Art Ed programs is expected; aid teachers and students in acquiring the personal agency to develop critical, inclusive, transactional, and informative arts practices appropriate for engaging the 21st century global village. Applicants must show evidence of an active and promising research and/or artmaking practice, as well as an established and ongoing record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Terminal degree required (PhD/EdD preferred; ABD considered). At least 3 years of K-12 teaching experience. The ideal candidate has a background in curriculum development and/or supervision and instruction, emphasizes critical perspectives in art education, and has a focus on community-engaged scholarship and/or urban education. S/he has experience developing and teaching post-secondary courses in art education and one or more of the following areas: visual culture; curriculum theory; critical pedagogy; disability studies; critical multiculturalism; museum education; policy studies; media literacy and new technologies.

 

Assistant Professor-Inclusive Education

Tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Inclusive Education. This position offers unique opportunities for the candidate to contribute to cutting edge research and teaching in the area of inclusive education in a collegial and progressive environment that welcomes and supports diverse perspectives. The candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty and students from across the School who are engaged in innovative school reform

Job Specific Qualifications

Qualifications for this position include: (a) an earned doctorate in special education or related field (completed before August 2009); (b) significant K-12 teaching experience in inclusive classrooms; (c) excellent research and teaching skills; and, (d) a strong commitment to the educational rights of students with disabilities.
