Master of Science

All students enrolled in the Master's Program at Syracuse University will obtain a solid foundation on how to apply theories of student development and learning to administrative, programming advising, policy-making, and faculty roles on behalf of students from diverse groups at varied institutions of higher education.

Degree Requirements

A total of 36 hours of course work is required (42 hours are strongly recommended in order to meet professional standards in college student affairs preparation programs). In most cases, students who are enrolled full-time take 24 months to complete the program. A two-year option to allow students to become more fully integrated into the Master's experience from an academic, social, and professional perspective is supported by professional associations in student affairs and higher education.

Two practicum internships are also required. These practicums are an opportunity to work approximately ten hours a week in a specific academic unit or with a specific academic program of the student's choice.

Opportunities can be pursued at SU or at other higher education institutions such as community colleges, private liberal arts colleges, and state universities. This experience provides students with an avenue to apply their classroom learning to real work situations. Each practicum accounts for three credit hours and requires a summary evaluation report. To strengthen their experience, students also participate in a bi-weekly seminar with the practicum coordinator and other practicum students.
