Graduate Student Activities

Exercise Science graduate students participate in a number of organized activities, both professional and social. Below is a listing of some of the major activities throughout the year.

1. Graduate Seminar: A one hour seminar on current research topics in Exercise Physiology, usually scheduled on Fridays at noon every other week. Seminar speakers are invited experts, department faculty and graduate students. Invited experts who have presented or are slated to present during the 2005-2006 academic year include:

Barry Braun, Ph.D., University of Massachusetts. INTELLIGENT DESIGN OF THE EXERCISE "DRUG" TO PREVENT/MANAGE TYPE-2 DIABETES.

David Gabriel, Ph.D., Brock University. SURFACE EMG: beauty is only skin deep.

Ron Dietrick, Ph.D., University of Scranton. IMPROVING HEALTH THROUGH HYSICAL ACTIVITY:  Research Suggests No Pain=Gain.

Jean Burke, Ph.D., New York Chiropractic College. INTEGRATING EXERCISE SCIENCE CONCEPTS TOWARDS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH CARE.

Kevin Keenan, Ph.D., Cornell University. LIMITS TO THE EXTRACTION OF NEURAL STRATEGIES FROM THE SURFACE EMG SIGNAL.

Todd M. Manini, Ph.D., National Institute on Aging. FREE-LIVING ACTIVITY ENERGY EXPENDITURE USING DOUBLY-LABELED WATER.

2. Professional Conferences: Most graduate students attend the regional ACSM and the national ACSM conferences and many present their own research at these conferences. The department supports student attendance at these conferences by paying for hotel expenses and some meals. Additionally, travel grants are available on a competitive basis through the Graduate School to cover additional costs. Our students have received numerous awards at these conferences, at both the regional and national level.

3. Journal Club: Each respective laboratory holds regular journal club meetings.

4. Social Gatherings: The Exercise Science department sponsors 2-3 social get-togethers each year, usually at the home of the department chair or one of the faculty. The students also have several informal social gatherings throughout the year.
