Checklist of Steps to File for New York State Certification
- Successfully complete New York State Teacher Certification Exams. Information, test dates, and registration is available online at www.nystce.nesinc.com
- Proof of completion of Child Health & Life Safety online seminar. Email nyschlss@syr.edu for more information and to enroll.
- Meet with an advisor in the Office of Academic and Student Services, 270 Huntington Hall, to be sure all degree requirements will be completed.
- Apply for fingerprinting clearance (150 Huntington Hall or call 443-1468).
- Apply for certification through TEACH Online Services at http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/ close to graduation date.
Completed Program Verification Letters
Letters of program verification can be requested only if you have completed all requirements. For more information, please contact Linda DeFrees, coordinator of career services and certification at 443-4759.
New York State Teaching Certification is NOT automatic, you must apply for it!

Each state has its own certification requirements. Although New York State has reciprocity with many other states, it is best to contact the Department of Education in the other states directly for an application and a listing of any additional requirements (i.e., other types of examinations, additional course work.)
