General Doctoral Level Course Requirements

  • EDU 781 - Institutions and Processes of Education (3 credits)
  • 5 courses (15 credits at minimum) in Educational Research Design and Methods - demonstrating depth of understanding and capacity through three courses in one genre, and breadth of understanding through two courses in other genres
  • 9-24 credits of dissertation work

Teaching and Curriculum Course Requirements

  • EDU 910 - Current Scholarship in Teaching and Leadership (3 credits)
  • EDU 915 - Teaching and Leadership for Social Justice (3 credits)
  • EDU/EDA 725 Current Research on Teaching
    or EDU/EDA 822 Assessment of Teaching
    or EDA 732 Leadership for Adult Development (3 credits).
  • EDU 727 Curriculum Studies
    or EDU 833 Critical Curriculum Theory
    or EDA 722 Curriculum and Instructional Leadership  (3 credits).
  • 4 courses (12 credits) in the student's specialization area, chosen in collaboration with your advisor. Possible areas include:

    • Curriculum Studies
    • Educational Leadership
    • Elementary Education
    • Inclusive Education
    • Multicultural Education
    • Music Education
    • Social Studies Education
    • Teacher Education
    • Urban Education

Students may develop more than one specialization, if they so choose; and students may design a specialization unique to their interests and needs. Additional courses needed to complete the program of study, which must total at least 45 credits in Teaching and Curriculum. Courses from previous graduate study, including master's degrees, may be included in the doctoral program plan; however at least 50% of coursework must be taken at Syracuse University.
