Doctoral Programs
The Department's doctoral programs prepare teacher educators to conduct scholarship in curriculum, instruction, and school leadership, as well as providing on-going professional development for teachers and leaders.
Doctoral programs affiliated with Teaching and Leadership have a long and distinguished history of developing researchers who challenge conventions in both theory and practice. Students in our programs have made - and continue to make -- major contributions to our understanding in such areas as inclusive education, teacher mentoring and evaluation, the women in educational administration, and pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics and science teaching.

Educational Leadership: The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program in Educational Leadership is designed for those who wish to pursue serious inquiry and scholarship in school leadership. The program emphasizes applied research in actual school settings.

Mathematics Education: The School of Education, through Teaching and Leadership and in cooperation with the Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers a Ph.D. degree in mathematics education. The program emphasizes preparation for academic positions in (a) research on the teaching and learning of mathematics, (b) teacher preparation and professional development, and (c) teaching mathematics education at the college level.

Teaching and Curriculum: The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Teaching and Curriculum program is designed to prepare educators for research in teaching and learning, curriculum, teachers, and teacher education. It serves students who wish to study teaching-learning processes in several of the disciplines in elementary and secondary education and selected non-school contexts, the theory and practice of curriculum, the lives of teachers, and policies and practices of teacher education.

Special Education: The doctoral program is designed to serve students who wish to pursue leadership positions in special education or related fields. This includes those who intend to seek a career as academic scholars, field-based researchers, government policy specialists, college and university teachers, public and private agency/organization directors, program innovators, social planners, and special education consultants.

Science Education: Graduates of the Ph.D. program in Science Education pursue a wide range of career paths. Many doctoral graduates assume faculty positions in elementary, middle or secondary education and/or teacher education at major research universities, as well as teacher preparation colleges. This degree prepares individuals to conduct science education research, teach science pedagogy and curriculum courses, and to create professional development programs for K-12 education. Some graduates also pursue careers as school district administrators.
