Master of Science in Literacy Education (Birth - Grade 6)

Program Overview

Syracuse University's degree programs in literacy reflect current thinking regarding the theory and practice of literacy instruction and are in concert with the recommendations and professional standards of the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Reading Panel report.  Our graduate programs require insightful knowledge of linguistic, cognitive, and social theoretical perspectives toward literacy, an understanding of oral and written language acquisition and development across the life span, preparation to implement principles and practices associated with formal and informal English language arts assessments and a demonstrated skill in developing balanced, culturally responsive classrooms and school-wide English language arts programs in which all students are valued, helped and expected to learn.
