Program Requirements

Program Core (15 credits)

All SSE students take a program core of five courses:

  • First Year Forum: EDU 101 (1 credit).
  • EDU 221 - Education for Transformation (3 credits)
  • EDU 310 - The American School (3 credits)
  • EDU 321 - International Education for Transformation (3 credits)
  • CFE 444 - Schooling and Diversity (3 credits)
  • EDU 400 - Research and Theory in Education for Transformation (3 credits)

Focus Area (18 credits)

Students satisfy this requirement by taking courses for their specific focus area. Contact your advisor for specific courses in each focus area. Substitutions are granted with the approval of their faculty advisor and submission of a petition form.

Liberal Arts Distribution (39-43 credits)

Lists of specific natural science, artistic expression, social science, humanities, and history courses are available from your advisor.

  • Three writing courses: WRT 105, 205, and 307 (9 credits).
  • Two mathematics courses (6 credits)–Any MAT courses. Courses should be sequential.
  • Two natural science courses with labs (6-8 credits).
  • Two courses in a language other than English (6-8 credits). Courses should be sequential.
  • One artistic expression course (3 credits).
  • One multicultural social science course (3 credits)
  • One multicultural humanities course (3 credits)
  • One history course (3 credits)

Additional Major, Minor, or Concentration

Students are advised to complete a full major, a minor, or an approved concentration in a liberal arts field as part of their program in selected studies in education. A complete list of available majors, minors and concentrations can be found in the Undergraduate Course Catalog.

Internship/experience (6 credits)

The internship experience offers students the opportunity to bridge the concepts they are learning in the classroom with what is happening in our global communities. This component of the program enriches students’ educational experience by providing the opportunity to work along side professionals who share similar interests.

We suggest that students complete at least two distinct internships (ranging from 2-4 credit hours each) during different semesters so that they are able to connect with a variety of agencies, professionals, and experts in their field. Students will write a weekly journal and submit a final paper to their faculty advisor for each internship completed.

These internships can take place in a wide variety of agencies, as long as students are overseen by an on-site supervisor and the proposed internship fits within a focus area. Although students will select sites and agencies based on their interests, they must consult with their faculty advisor to have it approved. It is strongly recommended that students begin an internship no later than the fall semester of their junior year.
