International Counseling Leader Speaks at SU
Dr. Tom Clawson, President and CEO of the National Board for Certified Counselors & Affiliates, spoke at Syracuse University on January 26, 2009 as the invited guest of the Department of Counseling & Human Services. An international leader in the field, Dr. Clawson has spearheaded efforts in the realms of credentialing, state licensure, testing, and globalization. Sponsored by the Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota (the counseling honor society), Dr. Clawson's talk focused on both the history and future of counseling. He highlighted the dramatic growth of the profession over the last twenty years in response to the increasing demand for mental health services in the U.S. and abroad, particularly in never-served areas.
Student Receives International Award!
It is our pleasure to announce that one of our own Syracuse University graduate students, Ms. Brenda Austin, President-Elect of the Sigma Upsilon Chapter, has recently been named as a 2009-2010 Chi Sigma Iota International Fellow and Intern!
Chi Sigma Iota International is the International Academic and Professional Honor Society in Counseling. Sigma Upsilon, the Syracuse University Chapter, is one of 252 chapters across the world. Each year, Chi Sigma Iota offers eight Fellowships, with two of those fellows being named "Interns." Fellows and Interns serve Chi Sigma Iota in different leadership capacities for that year, representing their chapters and regions to promote the counseling profession.
Every chapter is offered the possibility to nominate two individuals as Fellows (we nominated only one this year), and compete with the other 251 chapters for these positions. As you can see, this is a very prestigious award, and we are all very proud of Brenda for receiving this honor as not just a Fellow, but an Intern as well!
Please join us in congratulating her! We are very sure that she will represent us well in her Internship year. Brenda will officially receive her award and title at the 2009 American Counseling Association World Conference, in Charlotte, NC, this March.
This award is exciting not only for Brenda, but for the Sigma Upsilon Chapter. This is the Sigma Upsilon Chapter's fifth year of existence and fourth international award! This honor helps to highlight not only Brenda's hard work and dedication, but also further bolsters' Sigma Upsilon and SU's reputation in the profession. I hope you all take Brenda's example and engage in our chapter as we continue to grow and thrive. More information about Chi Sigma Iota's Fellowship and Internship Program can be found at: http://csi.affiniscape.com/login.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=217
Congratulations Brenda!
Graduate Student Organization Also Receives International Award!
The Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota has just recently been informed that they have received another international award!
The CSI Update, Sigma Upsilon's bi-monthly newsletter, has just received the Chi Sigma Iota Outstanding Newsletter Award. Letters of nomination for the newsletter said it stood apart from the others by including informative stories, diversity of authors, as well as excellent layout and graphics!
In hearing the news Dr. Dennis Gilbride, Professor and Department Chair, stated: "Wow, this is wonderful. Congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard on the newsletter!"
Dr. Melissa Luke, the Chapter Faculty Advisor, was quoted in stating: this "is good news for Sigma Upsilon, the Counseling and Human Services Dept, and SU. Although this is a 'chapter' award, we owe a lot to Jeannie Winters-Morris, Amanda Urena and Nichelle Rothong for their work in developing, expanding, and maintaining the high quality newsletter."
Thank you to all who have worked hard to develop and maintain our newsletter. A special thanks our current and past editors, Jeannie Winters-Morris, Amanda Urena and Nichelle Rothong, as well as past editorial assistant Marlene Ouderkirk, without whose service we would not have received such a prestigious honor.
The current edition of the CSI Update can be found here.
