IDD&E is at the forefront of contemporary research in the instructional sciences, with projects supported by such agencies as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the New York State Education Department. The department’s faculty members are highly respected in their fields, holding leadership positions in such national and international professional associations as
AECT,
ibstpi,
AEA, and
AERA. IDD&E faculty conduct collaborative research and development projects with colleagues in medicine, engineering, disability studies, and K-12 education.
In addition to their scholarly contributions, department faculty are also known for their teaching, particularly their encouragement of student projects with real world applications, and for their flexibility, especially their support of international and mid-career students. IDD&E maintains a flexible and progressive attitude toward courses, projects, and professional development, with a special emphasis on the integration of technology in learning environments and on managing and evaluating instructional systems and educational programs at all levels. Students come to the department from a wide variety of backgrounds, from teaching to social science, medicine to forestry and graphic design. Recent work includes projects in China, Thailand, and India. The department also has strong working relationships and valued adjunct faculty from such SU units as Project Advance, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, the Training Systems Institute, and the Office of Professional Research & Development, units in which IDD&E students gain essential experience and advanced professional practice.
